15 Marriage Admonitions: A father's words to his daughter

I came across this on Pinterest the other day and knew it was something I 1) wanted to share and 2) keep in the forefront of my mind.  I admit I had to visit dictionary.com a time or two while reading this, but did not want to change the beautiful language it was presented in.

15 Marriage Admonitions source

(Prior to his daughter's marriage, Mr. Richmond put into her hands a paper of directions for her future conduct, which, for simplicity, affection, and sound practical wisdom—may be considered one of the best dowries that a Christian parent could bestow on his child.)

My much-loved daughter,
When your sister Mary left her paternal roof, I gave her a paper of admonitions, which I requested her to read often. I do the same for you, in the form of a friendly string of maxims, to regulate your conduct in your new and very responsible situation.

1. Aim at keeping a devoted heart for God in the least and most common transactions of every hour—as well as in those events which may seem to call the loudest for manifestations of Christian prudence and principle.

2. Pray regularly and frequently, not seldom and occasionally—for grace to live by.

3. Remember the Christian principles and examples of your father's house, and everywhere endeavor to preserve its character, by consistency in conduct, conversation, and temper. Keep in constant recollection—the wise, prudent, and conscientious example of your dear mother.

4. Form no hasty friendship; and none whatever, but such as may promote seriousness of heart, tongue and life.

5. Beware of cheerfulness degenerating into levity. Let no natural vivacity of temper, no occasionally indulged sallies of humor and jocularity—throw a shadow over the exercise of solid principle. Little foolish things give a color to character, and are more easily imitated, than serious and good sentiments.

6. Guard against hasty judgments of character, and above all against uttering hasty opinions, and making remarks to the disparagement of others. Particularly avoid making the errors, failings, faults, or follies of others—the subject of rash and unguarded remarks. Be known for charity, forbearance, and kindness. Be slow to judge—rather than swift to speak.

7. Wherever you are, in the first place, remember that God's eye is upon you; and then imagine also that your husband and father are present. It may be a fanciful—but it is a profitable supposition.

8. Keep Christ's golden rule, "Do unto to others—as you would have them do unto you" in perpetual remembrance. It is the panacea for most of the social evils of life.

9. Be conscientious towards all; friendly with few; confidential with fewer still; strictly intimate with fewest of all.

10. When you think of your father, bear with his infirmities and pardon his faults—but remember his principles and instructions, so far as they have been agreeable to the Word of God.

11. Do not be content with anything short of deep, sincere, diligent, and decided piety.

12. If you and your husband happen to differ in opinion or feeling on any point—remember whom you have promised to love, honor, and obey—and this will settle all things.

13. Of your husband's warm affections towards you, I entertain no doubt—strive to preserve them by daily elevation of character; and not so much by fondness—as by prudence and dignity. May you both learn to raise a home of marital happiness—by mutual wisdom and love.

14. Observe great simplicity and plainness in dress. You should be a pattern to others in this respect. There is a just complaint made of many females who profess to be pious—that they are far too showy and mirthful in their outward apparel. Remember the apostle Peter's injunction, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

15. Christ has been made known to you fully and freely; let Christ be your all in all, both now and forever.

Receive my parting advice in love, and be assured, my beloved child, that it comes from the affectionate heart of your dear father.

Happy Saturday!

The Best Week Ever

My husband tells me this is not really the best week ever, I am just out of touch with how normal people live.  However, it started out with breakfast in bed and has included most of my favorite things thus far, so it will continue as "The best week ever" because:

1) Monday started with "Happy Vacation Week" breakfast in bed, which was followed by afternoon kayaking, followed by evening crafting/home projecting {with minimal conflict} and this awesomely fun Monday, was then concluded with my absolute favorite thing, watching the college world series with DJ :)

2) Tuesday, we took Peyton to Petsmart {presh}, DJ took my car to get taken care of, aannnnddd we stopped at Chipotle for lunch! My love for Chipotle runs deep, for Valentine's Day this year, we actually cancelled our fancy pants reservations, for some good smoked Tabasco and burritos, thats love.

I did mix up tea and tablespoon in the biscuits this morning, oops. Home maker in training, what can I say?

3) Finally, tomorrow we are headed to visit my Granny in Wilmington, NC to squeeze in some quality catch-up time and a few days at the beach! Fav, fav, really really fav.

My first clinical starts a week from today, I am a pretty balanced combo of excited and nervous{psh, I wish, I'm scared to death}.  I packed today and now feel a little bit more calm about it all :) {minus the fact that my pants were a little snug, but eh, whatev}

Anyways, here is a little photo summary of my past two wonderful days!

We learned all about wire shelving {and got bunches of new storage space!}, I know, no big deal, but I'm proud of it :)  {Big thanks to Sheila for letting us share her washer/dryer, just one of the many ways she is wonderful to us!}

I killed two pins with one project, both of which were rockin ideas:
See here and here for my inspirations

And we loved being "splorers" on the river, checking out all sorts of different places

Anyways, happy Tuesday!  Hope you are having an awesome week too :)

PS - HUGE praise that the Lord brought Audrey and her nursing team home safe from Cambodia this morning!

Just Another Crazy Weekend

Such a special weekend of celebrating!

We spent the weekend with DJ's family celebrating Grandma's 90th birthday!

And were also able to spend Saturday night celebrating Catherine and Chad's wedding with them!

All in all we came away from this weekend feeling completely exhausted, but also very blessed by all of the family and friends the Lord has surrounded us with.

3 days until the end of Maymester and 2 weeks until clinical begins!
Happy Monday!

Test of Fire

Now, I am not Catholic, but I am very passionate about Biblical Truth, our great country, and these upcoming elections and think this is a very impactful clip.  There is no "moderate" in this election, the lines are clearly drawn in the sand, and I am praying with everything in me that the American people get out and vote to uphold the Constitution and governmental system this country has abided by for over the past two centuries.

If you do nothing else this election season, please use your blogs and other social media to share where you stand and why.  We need to stand up and stand out for what we believe in.

A Chris Tomlin and Banana Bread Kind of Day

There are some days I wake up feeling energized and blessed to be alive, unfortunately today was not one of those wonderful days.

Today has been a yo-yo of emotions, brought on by circumstances of course, and my inability to see past them at initial glance.
However, it started with the most wonderful news of a sweet friend's engagement, which is the result of none other but the Lord's amazing leading and plan.  Despite that wonderful news, and early morning and a long class managed to take the wind out of me, which brought me to Pandora and this beautiful song.

It is amazing that something as simple as a song can re-direct my entire afternoon.

I am reminded of my moodiness with every change of the weather, and am continuously amazed at the loving support system the Lord has constructed around me, giving me the strength I need to face the challenges and struggles of this world daily.  I am so richly blessed.
On that note, I wanted to do something to brighten DJ's day, and banana bread seemed like a simple way to do that.  This is the first time I am using this recipe, but it turned out deliciously!

Banana Bread
makes 1 loaf and is super easy
{I rarely follow a recipe successfully, so easy to me means you can do things whatever which way you want and it will still taste good! :P}
original recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
5 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 cup mashed bananas
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
1. Mix the flour, baking soda, sugar, baking powder, and salt
2. Blend all other ingredients together
3. Slowly combine the two mixtures by adding the dry to the wet ingredients
4. Put in a greased 1.5 q loaf pan
5. Bake at 350* until the top is browned and loaf is cooked through

Happy Tuesday! :)

Stove Top Popcorn

I've been trying to make my snacks healthier lately and this was a total win!
I was nervous about burning the bottom of the pot or stinking up the apartment, but it turned out perfectly (and I am inhaling as I type now!).

Stove Top Popcorn!

Ingredients:
1/3 cup corn kernels
3 T coconut oil (or one that can handle high temperatures)
salt

Directions:
  1. Heat the oil & salt in a 3-quart saucepan on medium high heat.
  2. Put 3 or 4 popcorn kernels into the oil and cover the pan.
  3. When the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in an even layer. Cover, remove from heat and count 30 seconds.  This method first heats the oil to the right temperature, then waiting 30 seconds brings all of the other kernels to a near-popping temperature so that when they are put back on the heat, they all pop at about the same time.
  4. Return the pan to the heat. The popcorn should begin popping soon, and all at once. Once the popping starts in earnest, gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner. Try to keep the lid slightly ajar to let the steam from the popcorn release (the popcorn will be drier and crisper).
  5. Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the pan from the heat, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn immediately into a wide bowl.
Makes 2 quarts and almost all the kernels popped.

Initial instructions are from here

I love knowing exactly what I am eating and it is super super cheap compared to microwave! :)
Enjoy!

Eggplant Parmesan in the Crock Pot

Crock pot eggplant "parmesan" with Feta
{My response to "we should try using the crock pot more"}

With discipline and intentionality, I was able to kick the plague that overcame me and continue pushing through this difficult time they call May-mester {which we have renamed "cray-mester" and its just the first week!}.  It has been intense!  Leaving us with little going on in the kitchen.  My sweet husband made dinner every night this week because, I am sad to admit, I once again fell prey to the freak-out-because-I-will-never-get-through-this attitude.  You would think that third semester around I would get with the program.  Anyways, I have, and I will get through it, and I will do it all while we eat tasty healthy food too!

It is for this reason, you understand that DJ saying "we should try using the crock pot more" was not nagging or dissatisfaction.  It was a response to the idea of eating salads for dinner for the next 5 weeks.  So, here comes my attempt at slow cooking!

Our fridge is getting bare, I was sick for the first half of the week and now he is coming down with it, not conducive to grocery shopping. We don't have much, but we do have 3/4 of an eggplant, and so in response to "Crock pot eggplant" {real creative}, Google brought me to A Year of Slow Cooking.
Hallelujah!

Not vegan, but gluten free!

Crock pot Eggplant Parmesan with Feta

Ingredients:
-3/4 of a large eggplant
-3/4 cup plain breadcrumbs (gluten free is what I used)
-4 t Italian seasoning
-1 jar organic marinara
-Extra Virgin Olive Oil
-Block of Feta cheese
-salt & pepper

Directions:
  1. Wash the eggplant and slice it into 1/2 inch slices
  2. Cover the bottom of the crock pot with sauce
  3. Dip each slice of eggplant into the olive oil, coat with breadcrumbs, and layer into the crock pot.
  4. Once you have filled the crock pot with the eggplant, pour the remaining sauce in on top of the slices.
  5. Crumble feta on top, cover, and cook!
I cooked it on low for 4-6 hours.  The recipe also said you could cook on high for 3-4 hours.

I served mine over rice and DJ's over spaghetti.  He's not a big fan of eggplant, I'm thinking maybe I'll try the same recipe with zucchini.  It was all super good and very easy to make though, and made our apartment smell amazing! :)
